UEG works to strengthen journalism and editorial leadership through advocacy, professional development, and collective action in the public interest.
What We Have Achieved
Since 2021, the Uganda Editors Guild (UEG) has trained over 100 journalists and editors to navigate today’s complex media landscape. Our programs equip media professionals with practical skills to uphold accuracy, ethics, and relevance:
- Reporting 101: Mastering the fundamentals of strong journalism
- Issue-based vs Event-based Reporting: Focusing on stories that matter, not just headlines
- Combating Misinformation: Tools to identify, verify, and counter false narratives
- Ethics and Editorial Standards: Strengthening integrity and accountability in newsrooms
- Access to Information through the 2005 ACT.
By prioritizing continuous professional development, we ensure Uganda’s media is prepared to meet the challenges of misinformation, audience demands, and ethical reporting.

Journalists in Uganda face growing threats, harassment, and equipment confiscation. To address this, UEG has worked on various initiatives to ensure safety.
Launch of insurance scheme;
UEG launched a Journalist Insurance Scheme in 2024, enrolling over 50 of the most active and vulnerable journalists.
For two years, participating journalists are protected both medically and in terms of their reporting equipment—enabling them to report freely and safely.
“Knowing that my safety and equipment are protected allows me to focus on telling stories that matter especially in this election time, without fear,” says one enrolled journalist.
This initiative strengthens journalists’ resilience and ability to operate independently in a high-risk environment.
UEG has actively promoted freedom and independence in journalism. We have monitored violations against journalists, produced reports, and publicly condemned acts that undermine press freedom. Our reports have informed advocacy and ongoing engagements with stakeholders especially legislators and security forces.
By advocating for media independence, we empower newsrooms to operate without undue influence, ensuring citizens have access to accurate, impartial, and trustworthy information.

To strengthen citizen-focused journalism, UEG has invested in research and practical tools that bridge the gap between media and the public.
A flagship initiative is our Ombudsman Guide for Newsrooms, designed to improve audience engagement, accountability, and transparency. We are actively working with newsrooms to implement the guide, helping journalists respond effectively to public concerns.
