Journalists’ Safety Insurance scheme

Safeguarding Press Freedom

Journalists in Uganda operate in increasingly high-risk environments—especially during elections, riots, demonstrations, and other sensitive public moments. In response to these realities, the Uganda Editors’ Guild (UEG) introduced the Journalists’ Safety Insurance Scheme to protect journalists and their equipment while they carry out their professional duties in the public interest.

This scheme provides insurance coverage for journalists and their work tools, helping to reduce the personal and professional risks associated with frontline reporting. It is a practical intervention aimed at promoting journalist safety, resilience, and freedom of expression.

Since its introduction, the scheme has benefited over 50 journalists, enabling them to report with greater confidence, security, and dignity.

Who Can Apply?

The scheme is open to journalists who demonstrate commitment to ethical, public-interest journalism, particularly those covering high-risk assignments. With priority to female journalists, journalists whose commissioning editors are members of UEG, upcountry reporters and high risk reporters.

Application Criteria

Journalists seeking to be insured under the scheme are required to submit:

  • A motivation letter explaining their work, risk exposure, and need for insurance
  • A recommendation letter from their Editor share it on info@ugandaeditirsguild.org

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, subject to available funding.

Call to Funders & Partners

The demand for journalist safety support continues to grow. With additional funding and partnerships, UEG aims to scale up this scheme to insure many more journalists across the country, especially during critical democratic moments.
By supporting this initiative, partners contribute directly to:

  • Journalist safety and wellbeing
  • Independent and credible journalism
  • Democratic accountability and informed public discourse

Investing in journalist safety is investing in democracy.
