About Uganda Editors’ Guild

Who we are

The Uganda Editors’ Guild (UEG) is an independent, non-profit professional association of Uganda’s senior editors and media scholars, committed to fostering a professional, credible, and sustainable media that advances a democratic society. At its core, the Guild believes that editors must lead from the front in defending media freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and upholding professionalism in the sector.

Formed in April 2019 and incorporated in Uganda on March 17, 2020, the Guild was officially inaugurated on World Press Freedom Day, May 3, 2021, in Kampala. By the end of 2021, UEG had brought together 65 subscribing editors from across the country, alongside associated supporters including journalism training institutions and organizations working on media freedom, journalist safety, and freedom of expression.

Led by an executive drawn from Uganda’s major media houses, the Guild serves as a trusted platform for dialogue, mentorship, collaboration, and principled leadership in the media sector. As a non-profit organization, UEG is dedicated to deepening media independence, strengthening democratic discourse, and defending journalists’ rights. The Guild promotes professional standards, advocates for unfettered access to information for all Ugandans, engages with policy and legislative issues affecting the media, and responds to attacks on press freedom through principled public statements and collective action.

Through its work, UEG contributes to building a resilient, inclusive, and accountable media ecosystem that serves citizens’ interests, reinforces democratic governance, and amplifies the integrity of journalism in Uganda.
