Journalists’ insurance scheme: Voices of Change

Journalism connects communities and keeps power in check. Yet, for many journalists in Africa especially freelancers, women and rural correspondents, the work carries serious risks to health and livelihood. Without employer-supported health insurance or paid sick leave, illness or injury can mean lost income, delayed care and threats to their ability to keep reporting.
To bridge this gap, the Uganda Editors’ Guild, with support from the Danish Embassy in Uganda, launched the Journalist Insurance Scheme in 2025. The program has been designed to provide access to medical care and protect essential equipment for journalists working in challenging and unpredictable environments. We spoke with some beneficiaries of this scheme to understand if it is making any difference in their lives or easing their work. We were amazed! download the booklet to read their stories of change.
